The coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LAB-IA) at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas, Clécio De Bom, has been elected a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), one of the most relevant and prestigious international organizations dedicated to early- and mid-career scientists. Officially founded in 2010, the GYA brings together up to 200 outstanding researchers, selected globally based on their academic achievements and commitment to society. Its mission is to give a voice to young scientists worldwide, promoting scientific leadership, international collaboration, interdisciplinary dialogue, and greater engagement of science in addressing global challenges. Members serve five-year terms.

Clécio R. De Bom

The Global Young Academy was established with the support of major international and German scientific institutions. Its foundation was backed by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), and Die Junge Akademie, with initial funding from the Volkswagen Foundation. In other words, although the GYA is a global and independent academy, its institutional operations maintain a direct and ongoing connection with one of the most traditional scientific academies in Europe.

Clécio De Bom will join the academy representing the fields of Physics & Artificial Intelligence. The induction of new members will take place on June 30, 2026, at the opening of the Global Young Academy Annual General Meeting 2026, in Bremen, Germany, as part of the GYA’s annual international conference, scheduled from June 30 to July 3, 2026. With his election, Clécio R. De Bom becomes the first Brazilian physicist to join the Global Young Academy and, among its current members, the only physicist from Latin America.

“Joining the Global Young Academy is a great opportunity to contribute more actively to international discussions on science, innovation, and the development of new scientific leaders. I receive this appointment as a recognition of the work we have been developing at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas and of the growing relevance of the interface between Physics and Artificial Intelligence in addressing complex scientific problems,” the researcher states.

The appointment represents a highly significant international recognition of Clécio De Bom’s career and of the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas’s work in frontier research areas. Throughout his career, he has stood out for bridging Physics and Artificial Intelligence, with contributions in fields such as astrophysics, cosmology, deep learning, geophysics, and advanced research infrastructure.

At the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas, Clécio De Bom serves as a scientific leader and one of the founders of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LAB-IA), an initiative focused on developing advanced AI applications for complex scientific challenges. His work combines academic leadership, training of human resources, coordination of strategic projects, and the development of institutional capacity in artificial intelligence applied to science. Public information about his career also highlights his involvement in international collaborations, the development of scientific infrastructure, and the consolidation of a research agenda that bridges fundamental science, advanced computing, and innovation.

Clécio De Bom’s entry into the Global Young Academy reinforces the international presence of the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas in a strategic space for scientific leadership, global cooperation, and discussions on science, technology, and innovation policy. It also strengthens Brazil’s presence in an international network committed not only to academic excellence, but also to promoting a science that is more connected to society, focused on developing new leadership, and engaged with the major challenges of the future.
