Postdoctoral Opportunity at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Lab-IA) of CBPF

The Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF), through its newly inaugurated Artificial Intelligence for Physics Laboratory (Lab-IA), is opening 4 postdoctoral positions, with monthly compensation ranging from R$ 5,200 (fellowship) to R$ 8,000 (CLT contract) (2-year contract, extendable for an additional year).

About Lab-IA / CBPF

Lab-IA is a new state-of-the-art infrastructure at CBPF dedicated to developing AI algorithms applied to physical problems, including collaborations with industry.

Research lines include Astronomy, Astrophysics, Cosmology, Geophysics, and other areas of Physics.

The laboratory maintains national and international collaborations, such as with S-PLUS and the SOAR Telescope, as well as industrial partnerships (including projects with Petrobras) for R&D.

The infrastructure is modern, optimized for high performance, and focused on complex algorithms and machine learning workloads.

Candidate Profile

We seek up to 4 postdoctoral researchers with the following qualifications:

  • PhD completed or expected to be completed by March 2026 in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Physics, Geophysics, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong interest in working at the interface between AI and fundamental science (AI4Science), especially in problems related to physics and astronomy.
  • Desired experience: machine learning, deep learning, data science, large-scale data processing, physical modeling, or AI methods that incorporate physics (e.g., physics-informed neural networks, simulations, agents, LLMs, etc.).
  • Availability for on-site (hybrid) work in Rio de Janeiro. Depending on the position, work may be fully on-site or hybrid; in exceptional cases, remote work may be considered.

What We Offer

  • Postdoctoral fellowship: R$ 5,200 or CLT contract: R$ 8,000/month (senior position).
  • A high-level research environment at CBPF, a nationally and internationally recognized research center.
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge projects in astrophysics, cosmology, and applied physics, including metamaterials and health-related applications.
  • Participation in innovative academic and industrial collaborations.
  • Access to modern infrastructure and the potential to work with state-of-the-art AI, including emerging quantum AI technologies.

How to Apply

Applicants should submit:

  • Curriculum (Lattes or academic CV)
  • Motivation letter and research/interests statement: highlight how your background can contribute to Lab-IA (especially if you have experience with AI + physics)
  • Research plan or initial ideas: may be preliminary, but should indicate areas where you wish to contribute
  • Application contact: labia@cbpf.br (responsible: Clecio R. Bom)

Deadline: Applications will be accepted until January 5, 2026; if positions are not filled, the selection process may be extended.
